Tras un verano de incertidumbre después de que su nombre no fuera pronunciado por David Stern la noche del draft, Xavier Silas, uno de los máximos anotadores de la NCAA la temporada pasada, habló con Zona 2-3 acerca de la aventura que comienza para él este año en Francia.

Antonio Losada: No podemos empezar esta entrevista de otra forma que preguntando por tus familiares. Tu padre, James Silas, ya jugó en la NBA para los Spurs en la década de los 70 e incluso la franquicia de San Antonio retiró su numero años después de su despedida del basket. Además, Julius Erving está ejerciendo como tu padrino en los temas relacionados con la NBA. ¿Cómo ha afectado este ambiente a tu decisión de dedicarte al baloncesto profesional?
Xavier Silas: Mi padre fue la razón que me empujó a decidirme por el baloncesto. Siempre he querido ser como él.
AL: Entonces decides jugar al baloncesto y lo haces primero en Colorado (instituto) y después en Northern Illinois (universidad) llegando a alcanzar el séptimo mejor puesto de anotadores en toda la nación americana en tu último año universitario. Basándonos en lo que sucedió el pasado 23 de Junio, noche del Draft de la NBA, ¿crees que los aficionados y expertos infravaloran las estadísticas anotadoras de los jugadores provenientes de la NCAA?
XS: Bueno, no estoy seguro. Yo no tomé la decisión de ir a esos lugares el día del Draft pero lo que tengo muy claro es que tanto yo como ellos saben de lo que soy capaz.
AL: Todos hemos oído hablar de los workouts que tienen lugar antes del Draft. ¿Puedes decirnos que equipos se fijaron en ti y hablarnos un poco de esas prácticas?
XS: Philadelphia era el equipo más interesado, incluso me invitaron a ir a sus training camps el año que viene si finalmente decidía viajar a Europa para jugar allí la temporada completa debido al lockout. Los workouts fueron cortos pero intensos, aunque tampoco hubo nada especial. Digamos que los equipos solo quieren tratar de conocernos más personalmente y analizar nuestro juego más de cerca.
AL: Y después de todas estas prácticas llega el momento. El Draft 2011 arranca y Xavier Silas ve pasar los números sin escuchar su nombre. ¿Qué sientes ante tal panorama? Estoy seguro de que esperabas algo más…
XS: Philadelphia me llamó durante el transcurso del Draft invitándome a su training camp veraniego así que no tuve mucho tiempo para pensar en haber salido elegido ni nada por el estilo. Esa invitación fue como ser elegido en la segunda ronda del Draft.
AL: Así que los 76ers quieren que permanezcas con ellos y no te marches fuera de USA. Está claro que te invitan a sus instalaciones porque te quieren en su equipo para la siguiente temporada. ¿Qué pensaste cuando recibiste esa llamada? ¿La viste como tu gran oportunidad?
XS: Me dijeron que les gustaría que me quedase con ellos en Philadelphia pero que entenderían mi elección de marcharme a jugar en Europa si al final era lo que decidía. ¿Mi oportunidad? Creo que siempre he tenido esta oportunidad.
AL: Después de meses de restricciones debido al lockout llega Septiembre y no hay acuerdo a la vista para el comienzo de las actividades relacionadas con la NBA. Habías estado esperando una solución para poder probarte con los 76ers pero el tiempo se agotaba. Es entonces cuando Silas decide abandonar el mundo que rodea la NBA para jugar en Francia, concretamente para el BCM Gravellines. ¿Por qué tomaste esta decisión? Algunos jugadores se han marchado por dinero, otros para mantenerse en forma,… ¿A qué se debió tu marcha?
XS: Creo que tiene parte de ambos casos. Es una gran experiencia jugar con un equipo profesional. Me siento honrado por poder estar aquí y aprender a trabajar como un jugador profesional, además de conocer más sobre la cultura francesa.
AL: Tu decisión final te trajo a Francia, en Europa. ¿Piensas jugar todo el año en el país galo o has firmado una cláusula que te permita abandonar el equipo en caso de que el lockout llegue a su fin? ¿Has recibido ofertas de otros equipos y países como China?
XS: Sí, mi agente se encargó de llevar la situación y recibió múltiples ofertas de diferentes equipos, aunque al final decidimos venir a Francia. Creo que era lo que mas nos convenía. Y sí, voy a jugar todo el año para el Gravellines.
AL: Creo que fuiste el primero en saltar de USA a Francia, pero últimamente esa liga está recibiendo a muchos jugadores de la NBA como Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum e incluso Tony Parker. ¿Conoces el baloncesto europeo o algo acerca de la cultura baloncestística francesa? Tengo que decirte que terminaron segundos en el último Eurobasket este verano solo por detrás de España, así que aquí los conocemos bastante bien.
XS: Bueno, sé que la competición francesa es muy dura por lo que será una buena liga para que un rookie como yo pueda empezar a formarse en el baloncesto profesional. Aun así, tengo que decir que el baloncesto europeo es completamente distinto al jugado en la NBA.
AL: Hablando ya acerca del lockout y el futuro de la NBA, ¿crees que tendremos temporada este año finalmente? Las cosas se están poniendo cada vez más feas y ya se han cancelado varios partidos.
XS: Muchos jugadores de la liga y veteranos hablaron conmigo este verano y me recomendaron marcharme a jugar fuera del país. Creo que hice lo que tenia que hacer, solo hay que ver la cantidad de jugadores que están consiguiendo trabajos en equipos europeos o asiáticos. Me parece razón suficiente para ver que esto se está convirtiendo en algo serio.
AL: Sabemos que tu objetivo último es el de jugar en la NBA pero, ¿podemos esperar que firmes un contrato el año que viene? ¿Piensas que Philadelphia estará interesada en tus servicios después de todo un año?
XS: No tengo ni idea de donde voy a terminar. Simplemente mantendré mis opciones abiertas. Quién sabe… quizá si se da la situación puedo terminar jugando en España, incluso estuve estudiando español hace tiempo (risas).
AL: Es hora de la despedida. Buena suerte en tu aventura por Europa y gracias por este tiempo en el que hemos podido hablar con un futuro jugador NBA.
XS: Todo tiene su razón de ser, no hay casualidades en los altibajos de la vida. Simplemente tenemos que recordar esto y sacar provecho a nuestra existencia.

After an uncertain summer without his name appearing on the NBA Draft board, Xavier Silas, one of the top NCAA’s scorers last season talked with Palco Deportivo about the adventure he’s carrying out right now in France.
Antonio Losada: We have to start this interview asking you about your family and relatives. Your father, James Silas, played for the Spurs most in the seventies and got his number retired in the franchise. Furthermore you are also related to Julius Erving. How has this environment affected your decision to play professional basketball?
Xavier Silas: My Dad was the reason I decided to play. I wanted to be like him.
AL: So you decided to play basketball and worked for Colorado first and Northern Illinois then. Your averages were so high and you reached the seventh spot of the nation top scorers list. Do you think people underestimate NCAA’s scoring stats based on what happened that 23th of June?
XS: I am not sure. I didn’t make any of those decisions that day but I do know what I am capable of and so do they.
AL: All we’ve heard about the well-known workouts before the Draft night. Can you let us know which teams showed interest in your game and talk about the practices a bit? Did you work with other rookies over there, maybe making relationships with them during those workouts?
XS: Philadelphia was the most interested. They invited me to their vet camp and summer league next summer if I decided to come overseas for the year. The Workouts were short and intense, but nothing too different or special. They just want to see us up close and personal.
AL: The 2011 Draft arrives and you see the numbers run out without hearing your name. How does it feel? I’m sure you expected some more…
XS: Philadelphia called me during the draft and invited me to their team camp so I didn’t have time to expect more. The invitation was the same as getting drafted in the 2nd round.
AL: So the 76ers want you to stay with them and not to play overseas. They invited you to their training camps because they want you in their roster. What did you think when that call arrived? Did you see daylight?
XS: They expressed that they’d like me to wait but would understand if I played the year out in Europe. I have always seen daylight.
AL: After months of restrictions due to the lockout we reached September and still no agreement. You had been waiting for the resolution to play with the 76ers in the camp but the time started to expire for you. Here is when Silas decided to skip the NBA for a year and went overseas to play in France for the BCM Gravellines. Why did you make that decision? Some players say they need money and others just want to keep their game active. What is your deal?
XS: It is both. It is a great experience to play with a really talented professional team. I am honored to be here and learn how to be a pro and about the French culture.
AL: You finally took the French offer to play in Europe. Are you willing to play the whole year in France or do you have a clause to leave the team if the NBA comes back? Did you receive more offers from other countries, maybe China?
XS: My agent received multiple offers from different countries but we decided France was the best fit. I am committed to win in France for this year.
AL: I think you were the first to take the step to the French league but now we have a bunch of NBA players in this competition. Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum, the unexpected Tony Parker… Do you know something about the European basketball culture or even about the French game? They finished 2nd in the last Eurobasket this summer just behind Spain so they are well known here.
XS: I know that the French game is very competitive and it is a great league to play in especially as a rookie . European basketball is definitely different than the NBA.
AL: Talking about the lockout and the future of the NBA, do you think we’ll have a season this year? The things are going worse than expected and the first games are going to be cancelled as well.
XS: A lot of NBA veterans told me I made the right move. The amount of players taking jobs in Europe tells us it’s very serious.
AL: I know your objective is to play in the NBA but can we expect you to sign a contract in the NBA next summer, without lockout in the horizon and with the CBA already signed? Do you think Philadelphia will still be interested in your services?
XS: I have no idea where I will end up. I will keep my options open. Who knows… With the right situation I could end up in Spain, I took Spanish clases (laughs).
